Changes to Reference Fields do not change the Last Updated Date

We use multi-item reference fields extensively in the collections underpinning our website. I have noticed that actions like removing or inserting a multi-item references do not change the Last Updated Date of the item in either the referencing or referenced table. I understand that the Last Updated Date only appears once per item and not per reference, but it still would be very helpful to have that field updated when ANY action that affects the item is made. Thanks.
