Disclaimer before I begin, yes I know Editor X exists and is fantastic for clients who want their websites to be managed by a third party but is not realistic to expect most clients to take the time to learn an advanced editor to make modifications to their site, which is one of the core selling points that attract customers to Wix.
With this being understood by most of the partner community and Wix staff as a whole, why in 2021 are Wix partners and more advanced DIY users still restricted to having to sacrifice on either tablet experience or desktop experience?
I’ve seen the argument that it is to ensure that even those with no design experience can stay between the guidelines and create a site that looks nice on tablets, but is restricted to 980px width on the desktop when the most popular design systems use ~980 as a minimum width for desktop, not the maximum.
Yes, stretched strips, stacked strips, full-width elements, and non-intentionally implemented by Wix workarounds can mitigate the user experience, but that adds unnecessary complications that Wix is supposed to take away from creating a professional website.
Is not implementing at least a third (tablet) breakpoint and switching the desktop minimum to ~980px a strategic play to get more customers over to Editor X, or would implementing such a feature be too resource-intensive for an organization that does $1B in revenue?
How/Why have some of Wix’s competitors who are 20% the size of Wix been able to bring this functionality to their basic DIY editors (Squarespace etc.), yet Wix has not?
I think that if the justification for not implementing this capability is to ensure an easier experience for DIY users, then it should be a setting that is off by default but can be enabled by someone who knows what they are doing.
I take pride in designing and delivering top-notch websites to my clients and am a Wix advocate for 99% of small business website use-cases, but I feel heavily limited in my ability to actually produce a result I envision for the website with most of that limitation coming being forced to design a desktop website with tablet breakpoints.
I’m curious as to what the active Wix Partner community thinks of this limitation, and am also interested in hearing from the product team, as maybe there is data backing their decision to keep these restrictions in place.
