Casual Wix builder here looking to make the leap into the fray and joining the Icon program and do this for a living.
What online courses/trainings/certifications would you advise someone take at the beginning of the journey to make sure bases are covered? (digital marketing / SEO / Wix knowledge / social / Google / etc.) - thanks!
Also I’ve got my favorite tools for domain registration, SEO and others, but what are your favorites?
I’ve recently started my own agency, so have been/am in the situation you are in. Not to sure about where you are within your journey, so this may or may not be helpful.
Here’s a list of the things I have learnt, and the things I have found have helped me: Take help when it is offered to you . Not necessarily take all of the help that is offered (sometimes its not what you are looking for). I’ve had a friend read through policies/contracts and it has proved helpful, especially for typos that I have missed. Spend time learning - I’ve subscribed to a few YouTube channels that have really helped me learn, not only from the technical aspect of the site, but also the design side. There is a channel called ‘Flux’. The guy who runs it, has his own web design academy, and whilst he tends to use Webflow, the information is often transferable, and I have found it amazing to learn from. There are a few others which are helpful. Relearn how to sel l - I’ve bought a book called ‘Gap Selling’ and whilst I am only a few chapters in, I have learnt so much. The biggest thing I have learnt is that you are not selling a service or a product, you are selling a solution to a problem. The customer doesn’t really care to much about what you are able to do, they care about the problem they have and how it can be solved. For example, the problem may be that they are not getting any leads. That is the problem you are solving, and the book is great at explaining it.
Those are just one or two of the things that I have learnt. The biggest thing is not to be afraid to ask for help, and make sure you are doing everything within the law (whether you like it or not).
All the best with your journey, and if you have any questions, don’t hesitate to pop me a question and I’ll do my best to help
Thanks! Subscribed to Flux! See I take all the help! Also, former VP sales here - doing this as a “stay at home dad as a family member needs help” type project, maybe I’ll go back to leading tech startups, maybe I’ll like it here and never leave!
I would say attempting to try to cover all of the bases to a professional degree isn’t very practical if you are currently a one man show. I’d take a step back and look at the various service offerings and determine which ones you think you can provide the highest tier of service in and that you find most enjoyable to do.
The few leads a day you receive are based on the services you have selected, therefore if you have every service option selected, you will be all over the place and trying to learn while in the middle of a project isn’t exactly best practice for a paid engagement.
Stick to what you’re good at initially, double down on the details of those 2-4 services and build your reputation and client base. From there, you should begin learning at the high level the other specializations so that you can properly outsource/hire team members to fill those gaps that will enable you to offer those services on top of the ones you currently handle alone.
Completely agree / am trying to figure our what are the “basic essentials” should be and get them right out of the gates. I plan to refer/hire what I can’t do reasonably well.
I’d say just deep diving into Wix itself so that you are able to easily identify what is and isn’t possible with Wix. Clients can some with some of the craziest requests and nothing is worse than not being able to give them a general idea whether it is possible or not. A knowledge of the various plugins for the various industries will be huge, as well as a strong knowledge of the backend/dashboard is a great place to start.
Thanks / what do you use or recommend for SEO tools and others to complement the WIx tools/apps? From diagnostic from current site they wish to move away from to managing the new one on Wix?
