I always decide based on demographics. If the target audience is more in the millennial age group or younger, hamburger menus work fine. Go nuts and be creative. If it’s a more general market I try and use the standard menu. Some people just don’t get the hamburger thing at all yet and it can be a big UX issue. Just my two cents.
