Hello,
Many products in my webshop consist of items with different VAT rates. For example, I sell DIY kits containing boxes and candy. The customer receives the boxes and almonds separately, allowing them to assemble the kits themselves. I do not want to sell these parts separately, so they have to be shown in the webshop as 1 product.
The boxes should be charged at a VAT rate of 21%, while the candy falls under the 6% rate for food products in Belgium. Is there a way to allocate a percentage of the product price to one VAT rate and another percentage to the second VAT rate?
Thank you in advance for your help!
Hi,
From a legal perspective (EU), you’re required to apply a single VAT rate when selling an individual item, like a box. If the box includes non-food products, you can’t use the reduced VAT rate (e.g., 6% for food). This means that for mixed-product boxes, you’d need to check with a legal expert to determine the correct rate.
However, if you sell the items separately (even as part of a box), each product can have its own specific VAT rate. This way, there’s no issue with applying a single rate to the whole box.
From a technical perspective, one solution could be to develop a dedicated page for the box sales. When a customer selects a box, the system would automatically add the components as separate items in the cart, each with its correct VAT rate. This approach ensures compliance and transparency for customers, as they can see the breakdown of prices and taxes for each item.
If you find another solution that’s simpler or more effective, I’d be interested to hear about it—might be useful for my own site!
Best regards,
