How to set Blog comments off by default?

Question:
Is there a way to set Blog comments off by default?

What are you trying to achieve:
We allow comments on just one or two blogs. We want to have comments turned off by default for any new blog entry. We have “members only” may comment set to true, but it is not fine grained enough.

What have you already tried:
I have tried to train people to always click the advanced settings tab and turn commenting off from there, but they forget. So now I run a job at night that updates any new blog entries in CMS and sets commenting to off, which seems like the wrong approach even if it works.

I’ve decided to go ahead and run that nightly job. The only downside is that it just leaves commenting enabled for up to a day. I run a night job anyway to expire certain categories of blog posts and move them to unpublished.
