How come in preview mode the shape becomes larger and moves upwards whereas when I’m editing it’s in my desired position and size?
I haven’t added a grid to the page, from what i know Editor X is meant to allow items to be dropped anywhere you want without you need to use a grid format, am i understanding this correctly?

grid is one of the best tools to place elements according to your requirements, so usually, we recommend our users to use grids, I’m not sure what dockings settings were on the site in the screenshot moment, but I can suggest you do the following: add a grid between the basic shape and iPhones image and dock the image and shapes to this gridline. along with this, you can place text and shapes in one container, so you won’t have to adjust each element:
