Looking for Help with a Product Configurator for a Laser Engraving Online Shop

Hi everyone,

I’m currently working with a client who wants to set up an online store focused on laser technology. The main offering will be custom engravings created with a laser machine, alongside other related products.

One of the core requirements is a product configurator that allows customers to personalize items (e.g., add their own text or designs). A good example of the kind of functionality we’re aiming for can be seen here:

I’m a web designer, but the technical implementation of such a configurator is beyond my current coding skills. That’s why I’m looking for someone who has experience building something similar – ideally using modern tools and best practices.

My questions:

  • Is this something you or someone you know could help implement?
  • What kind of time and budget should I expect for a setup like this?

Any insights, recommendations, or leads would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks in advance!

Best regards,
Vasilis

@Quentin_Plomteux - I know you’ve built a few product configurators :slight_smile:

Hello @Vasili,

I built a few of those, but they were oriented toward business rather than customer customization.

I believe the app you shared is built using Zakeke. They have a Wix plugin in the marketplace: Zakeke - Product Customizer | Wix App Market | Wix.com

I’ve never used it, but it’s the closest option available without custom coding

Does that help?

Hey @Quentin_Plomteux ,

This looks great, thanks for sharing! The only downside with Zakeke is really the pricing. My client plans to launch with around 50–70 products right from the start, which would cost him roughly $2,000 per year. That’s quite a commitment, especially when it means being dependent on a third-party platform, which is often not ideal.

I’ll definitely suggest it and keep it in mind as an option, but I believe a custom-coded solution might be a better long-term fit for this project.

Custom code would start at $2000 for a single product type.

There are many things that need to be developed and edge cases to cover, so in the end, Zakeke is not that expensive. The benefit of Zakeke is that it allows you to easily add new types of products, whereas custom code would only fit the initial requirements and require additional work to extend the system to accommodate new product types.

But if you are ready to commit to such an investment, I’d be happy to have a chat.

Thanks for the clarification, that makes total sense.

The flexibility and scalability Zakeke offers definitely justifies the cost in many cases.

In my case, the client is very price-sensitive and prefers to avoid ongoing platform dependencies if possible. That’s why I was leaning toward a custom solution, even if it requires more effort upfront just to maintain full control and avoid recurring costs.

That said, I’ll bring both options to the table this weekend, and if they’re open to a proper investment, I’d be happy to get on a call and move forward with your support.

Thanks again!
