Outdated Dataset Display

I’m loving a lot of the features of Editor X, once you get the hang of them it seems very natural to use and it would be hard to go back to the original editor now already, which is a good sign!

The only real “bug” I’ve had is with the dataset icons. A couple of times on different pages (dynamic and not) I’ve added datasets and thought it didn’t work as the dataset icons didn’t appear on my pages workspace. I found the best way to make it work was to duplicate one that already existed the few times when I’d been able to add a new dataset in the first place (it seemed random as to whether it worked or not) and then change the properties of the duplicate instead of creating them “new” from the menus.

When I started connecting the data to elements on the page I saw in the options all the greyed out unassigned “ghost” datasets that I had added before (I’ll add an image of this) …so they do exist somewhere, just not anywhere I can get to. And there is no way of finding them as elements on the page like you would with a text box or image or whatever… I’ve also had the main dataset of a dynamic page disappear too, the data is still connected on the page and it all works great, but there is no icon to click to adjust the properties or set filters etc… it’s just not there. And as far as I know there is no other way to access the properties other than through the icon?

On the old editor sometimes the datasets would end up “lost” off the work area and you’d have to make your page infinitely long to scroll and find them and manually move them back up into view and then reset your page size, that happened quite often… but on Editor X they are supposed to be pinned to the screen anyway? And I couldn’t find any of these missing icons anywhere checking to see if they were just “somewhere else” out of view… (perhaps they’re off screen for some reason?) I tried changing to different breakpoints to see if they’d just been dislodged from changing to the smaller screen size and not readjusted when switching back to a larger screen, but that doesn’t seem to be it. It’s very mysterious!

So my first suggestion for a feature would simply be to add Datasets into the layers panel so you can clearly see what you’ve added to your page at all times easily and bring up and edit the properties from there.

But… my preferred suggestion would be to get rid of the dataset icons entirely… I already disliked the system in the original editor, they constantly get in the way, as I mentioned they’d often get lost off page, it is just a hassle all together. There is honestly no reason I can think of for them to take up your workspace with so many other panels and menus available to contain them instead? Especially with Editor X being so clean and optimised where everything seemingly has a reason to be where it is to speed up the workflow the clunky Dataset icons now seem super antiquated… if datasets could be added to the layers instead, or better still make a new section for them (obviously it would only appear if Dev Mode is on) at the top of the page in all that blank space next to ‘site structure’ etc they could be displayed cleanly and without any confusion, you open your Dataset panel, click on your chosen dataset just like you would with sections in Layers and either open the properties or the database exactly like the icons would, but you could collapse the panel and have an entirely uncluttered workspace!

I mean if none of that is possible for some technical reason at the very least a quick fix might be an “align datasets” button that appears somewhere when Dev Mode is on that you could press which would stack them all on top of each other into the centre of the workspace to make them easy to find when they get lost? Or better still change the design to appear as 1 fixed dataset icon that is pinned to the top of the workspace a bit like when you have the “code properties” option active or like the “Preview” widget on a dynamic page. It could work like a dropdown menu where you choose dataset1, dataset2, etc, it switches to the one chosen and allows you to access that particular sets properties or open the database as normal but without being so intrusive to the workflow or literally getting in the way physically as they currently do.

Anyway, besides that it’s been a great experience so far with Editor X and I look forward to all the new amazing upcoming features!

Hi @themusingsofmaars

I am Sebi from the Editor X Team.
Thank you for taking the time to share your issues and suggestions for dealing with them.

We mentioned it recently on the Partners Community Roundtable for the Editor X Beta launch we brought over Corvid and Wix Data as is from the Classic Editor and we plan on rethinking how it is impl and new technologies very soon. Your points definitely help us understand what issues we have to fix on our product, so continue to share with the rest of the community and start conversations.

In regards to the bug you mentioned, we are aware of this issue. It happens when you scroll down on the page, the dataset is added very far from the viewport. If you stay scrolled to the top you should experience any issues adding datasets on your site. We hope to have a solution for this soon!

We would love to hear more from you in the future!
