Poor Pages and Layers management panes

I really enjoy working with most of Editor X, but one aspect is so poorly implemented I feel it needs flagging up again for improvement, and that’s Pages management.

Take a look at my 1st screenshot from my current site, which shows how things are through the Site Pages sidebar:

  • the sidebar is fixed width, meaning that although you can give a page a meaningful name, you can never actually view that name in full…unless of course you guess / scroll to the page to hover directly over it. (BTW please don’t criticise my long page names; they’re overly-long in a lot of cases precisely because there’s no adequate way to organise, manage & group pages properly in EdX)

  • following on, there’s no way to sort or group pages. Nothing like custom groups, custom sorting, active / inactive groups etc. The whole sidebar is ‘frozen’, making it an absolute nightmare to locate & work with a page quickly.

  • the workaround of a search box is fine, but should only ever be an option, not a workaround. I need to see my full page names & also be able organise my pages properly, how I want, without having to fall back on searching or scrolling.

  • planning & organising a site in EdX becomes almost impossible for the previous reasons too.

The 2nd screenshot shows the editor drop-down pages list which is just as inadequate as the pages sidebar. It also has a fixed width display with no other configuration / view options available…and again I’m only able to properly view a page name to select a page after scrolling down then guessing which page to hover over…not good!

It’s easy to see from this that anything other than just small sites, with not many pages, can quickly become very frustrating & difficult to work with in terms of page navigation.

The performance in this area really lets down what is a great product, which I find otherwise to be a joy to use each day.

Without overstating it I think, pages management in EdX is dreadful, a nightmare to use each day…and since this is such a fundamental aspect of EdX, in use ALL the time, these shortcomings badly affect productivity, so we really do need to see some improvements here fast.

So, come on EdX, you can do better than this…

Please introduce the badly-needed & long-overdue changes to this area of EdX like yesterday!

Hear you loud and clear and thanks for the images. I remember a team member mentioning in the forum there are plans to organize the pages panel.

I know you mentioned it here that you would like a dormant pages but is there any reason you have pages listed as NOT IN USE ? Do you not have them visible on the site?

Hi Roberto, the pages that are ‘NOT IN USE’ are for later stages in the project - not all of the website is going live at the same time, there’s feature areas that need to be worked for a bit before then. A couple of the pages are test pages too, and again the only way I can distinguish any of theses pages that aren’t part of the about-to-be-live site is to also name them ‘NOT IN USE’.

As I said previously, the only reason I’m doing this is because there’s currently no other way to group or organise pages. We need additional features like this to be able to manage a site effectively I feel.

But this problem is of course made much worse by the fact that any pages with names longer than a few characters can’t be read easily. This is why I say the whole area of pages management needs revisiting & sorting out, not just from an ease-of-use perspective, but also to improve site management & productively too.

I’m finding the fixed width of the Layers panel has also become a big problem too.

Looking at this new screenshot you’ll see why…

It’s not possible to read any layer name beyond a few levels deep, again unless you hover over items.

…this really is restrictive & hopefully will be sorted ASAP.

I am having exactly the same problem reordering the pages in the “page panel”

I have about 70 pages and every time I encounter a pulldown menu to select a page I have to scroll through all 70 pages in the “order they were created” to find the desired page.

How much work is it to implement the same reorganizing functionality that already exists in the std Wix editor

There is an “enhancement” request for this omission, but voting is just measuring how overdue the fix is and an excuse to put it on a back burner

Hi there - This is something the team is currently working on, specifically for the Site Pages panel. We should be updating you in the next few weeks once the change is updated and you can enjoy this easier page management in the editor.

As Aaron mentioned, it’s in the works but something I’ve noticed since this was originally posted, if you are naming your pages in a very specific manner like Keithc was, searching helps a lot since you can pull up your pages quite quickly then.

Searching is great, but it isn’t an option from a pulldown menu
