Right now you cannot put images in a repeater and have it fit its original format. If you want a user to input images in the database, the images will get cropped or stretched if not in the right format.

Yes this is something we really need to get correct, images are so important to the overall design and placing limitations on sizing and scaling pics is severely restricting.
