connect gallery to multiple databases?

So close! Just this one last connection…

I’m working on a photography site with six categories of work. I have set it up with one database (“library”) for all 6 categories, which will be hundreds of projects (thousands of images).

I have one link on the menu, “work,” it lands on a regular page with a grid gallery of the categories. Each image in the grid links to a its unique category page, also set up as a grid gallery. Each image in the grid calls up the repeater with individual project info. There is an image gallery (slider) on the item pages. Number of images per project varies.

Since there will be so many images, I was going to segregate them in (6) separate collections, one for each category. I started with one to test and got it connected to the gallery.

So far so good - but now i have 5 more to connect. Is that possible? Or do I have to use just one collection for all the (thousands of) images?

If the latter is the case, will thousands of images in one collection make for inefficient load time or be otherwise problematic?

Any advice or suggestions about the most efficient means of organization and display for the described site is much appreciated.
