Can you create a Transparent Text Mask?

What are you trying to achieve:
I want to have a flat black header that is fixed to the top the page. I want to apply a text mask on the header that is transparent, so that as you scroll down the site’s sections scroll underneath the header but are visible through the text mask.
What have you already tried:
Text mask feature - but this doesn’t allow you to remove the media within the text mask. I’ve also tried gradients but that doesn’t allow me to make it transparent either.
I guess what I am trying to do is Subtract the Text Body from the Header, and have the header fixed to the top of the page.
