I have the same issue. It is the most frustrating and easy to solve issue. Its a complete oversight on Wix’s part. No one from Wix has ever been able to solve this for me.
Extremely annoying. I manage a small club website (members only). Our users are not IT savvy, so everything is down to me. When members RSVP to an event, some DISPLAY NAMES do not appear at all, and some are “minimal” depending on the data provided. I can see who RSVP’ed in the backend (because I have their full contact details) but members cannot see the display name information on the front end or mobile app (Spaces).
The only answers I have found are “Write some Velo code” (beyond me) or “You cannot edit members display names”…neither is an option. It is “sold” to us as a privacy issue, but a simple fix for this would be to add DISPLAY NAME as an option in privacy settings. I am almost at the point where perhaps I need to change providers, because this is an issue that frustrates my members. Come on WIX, I’m not the only one who has this issue. The site is pretty good for small clubs, but this is a big issue that all clubs need fixed. There must be thousands of clubs out there that would appreciate a CLUB TEMPLATE (that inlcuded DISPLAY NAME functionality for events. Pretty much everything else is “Ready to go”…

The Display Name option becomes available when the “Profiles page” is added to Wix Members Area (and is added for a few Wix Apps that require it)
But yes, since members are often used for social spaces on sites, allowing them the option to choose a nickname enables site members the autonomy to choose what name/details they use within a social space. This is part of the reason for not allowing this (to prevent Admins overriding how a member chooses to identify themselves to other members).
As you mentioned it’s possible with a little code.
The alternative that might work for your use case is creating an “article page” of sorts that outlines the steps on how to update their nickname.
