I build a lot of sites for small service businesses (clinics, HVAC-style shops), and the same two mobile misses keep showing up. Sharing the checklist I run on my phone — no pitch, just the pattern.
-
The phone number isn’t tappable.
Looks fine on desktop. On a phone it’s plain text or baked into a header image, so the visitor has to memorize it. Fix: a real tel: link, and ideally a sticky Call bar near the bottom thumb zone. -
“Request a callback” / “Book” form says thanks and then goes quiet.
Submit → gray “Thank you.” No text, no email, no idea when anyone will call. On the business side the submission sometimes lands in an inbox nobody checks after 2pm, or with someone who left the company.
What I do on every site before calling it done:
- Open the homepage on my phone (not desktop preview only). Tap the number. Does the dialer open?
- Fill the form myself from a personal email. Time how long until something useful hits a human (email, SMS, CRM row — whatever the site uses).
- Cut the form to the few fields you need to call them back. Model numbers and “how did you hear about us” can wait.
- On the success state, tell them what happens next in plain language (“We’ll call you within X minutes during open hours”).
Made-up example: if 10 people try to call from mobile this week and 3 bounce because the number isn’t tappable, that’s invisible in your analytics as “lost leads.” It just looks like a quiet week.
Anyone else have a short mobile QA list they run before handoff? What else do you always catch?
