We all know that there are a million device pixel sizes out there, and NO approach can guarantee perfect simulation on all of them. But there are a handful which represent probably 80% of the whole, which you already make available in your devices list when in Preview mode. Fair enough.
Why not just put these presets into the Edit mode as well?
Yes, we can add our own, but these are so counterintuitive, as they only allow the definition of the breakpoint’s pixel WIDTH.
Why can’t I define my own breakpoint as, say, 428px x 926px (iPhone 12 Pro Max) and have the design area snap to exactly that aspect ratio. If I have an item that is set to 100vh or 100vw, I will then see how everything is behaving. Any “good” designer is already building in wiggle room and not fitting to the max — because they understand that this is a road to disaster, but at least provide us with a good starting point!
Also, users are ALWAYS spinning their phones or tablets into landscape orientation for easier reading or a better website experience etc. Why not add a “landscape/portrait” toggle so we can replicate that behavior and quickly see how our design is behaving?
I now design EVERYTHING from mobile “up”. I have to. I’m working to data that proves 70%+ of first time site visits are now on mobile. I know my site will be fine on a 4K monitor, I’m not bothered about desktop. It’s the mobile experience that matters the most to my clients now.
HELP US OUT HERE. I’m sure you have a mountain of feature requests to get through, but I know enough about dev to believe that providing us with the ability to build our own persistent list of x and y dimension presets can’t be that hard. It will give you a strong edge over your competition and make a lot of serious designers (who’ve moved to EditorX precisely FOR the responsive feedback), very happy and more likely to be ambassadors for your platform.
If some new phone comes out with a radically different size and aspect ratio, we can just add it to our master list if we need to.
Thank you.
