Can someone here please help me? This is not a “programming” question, but I’m getting really frustrated and WIX service cannot help me. For the last year and a half I have been creating category and item dynamic pages with no problem at all, so until know I’ve really known what I was going when it come to this.
Over a week ago, WIX put in a new interface for creating dynamic pages . Previously, when I wanted to convert an existing non-dynamic page to dynamic, I would select “Set as Dynamic Page,” and then I would be given an option to select dynamic “Item” vs “Category” page. Now the system doesn’t ask which type of dynamic page I would like to create. It automatically converts the page to an “item” page (and also doesn’t ask me to set the Category Page URL like it use to). What am I missing here, and how can I continue to convert pages to dynamic “category” pages so I can display my database items in list format (and link those pages to my dynamic “item” pages)?
I thought this would be an easy answer, but WIX has not updated their help center with the new instruction, and I’ve been going back and forth with their service reps who also don’t know what is going all. Twice I got responses telling me to follow the old instructions, and then I got a response that obviously is not accurate.
Currently, when you convert a regular page to a dynamic page both dynamic category and dynamic item pages are created. This happens after you select a collection.
You change the URL of a dynamic category by clicking settings then Page Info:
To link your image or button on dynamic category page to dynamic item page, you need to select the dynamic item page under ‘Link Connects to’ dropdown:
Should you need further assistance, please share what you think you did right, what you’ve tried to do, and what’s blocking you. Include any relevant screenshots, code, and URLs to make it easier for others to understand the problem.
When I follow the steps you provided in this post, the dynamic page that is created is an ITEM page. There is no opportunity to select an option to create a CATEGORY PAGE.
I have the same problem and was just on the phone for 2 hours with Wix support, only to find out that the Corvid support is a separate team that only responds by email. So don’t go that route. I will let you know what I hear back from them.
Hi all. Thanks for the responses! Okay, after lots of back and forth with Wix service, and just playing around myself, here’s the answer that the service team cannot seem to clearly communicate, as it’s clear they don’t really understand the change themselves (they did tell me this is part of a test and the documentation has not yet been updated in the help center). Hopefully this is clear:
When you “set a dynamic page” the page will automatically create an “Item” page tied to the database that you select.
To make it a “category” page, go into the page settings to the URL name.
In the URL name take out any custom fields that are being pulled in from your database. Basically just name your URL without using the “add field” function. Now you have a “category” page.
To make an “item page,” use the “add field” function customize your URL.
You should then be able to link you “category” pages to you “item pages”.
It’s not difficult. just confusing and more time consuming as now you have to go into each page a set the URL after the dynamic page is created. I’m not sure why this change was needed, as I thought the old way worked very well and was easy to use. But anyway that’s apparently how it works, at least until they change things again without telling anyone Phil
At least it makes me feel less crazy. Unfortunately, I had my settings correct as you described, but the issue I am running into is many duplicates of the same category name on my repeaters and lists.
I have scrubbed the database line by line to make sure the category column had no variations of the same name. I will chalk it up to an issue with Wix and revisit the issue later.
Hey Ryan. You may have already considered, but if not, check your “live” database, as opposed to the “sandbox.” When I have duplicate entries, it’s because I deleted a record in the sandbox, which didn’t get deleted in the live database (I’ve found it’s best not to delete any ID numbers, but rather overwrite them instead to keep the duplicates out of the live date). I wasn’t sure if this is the problem you were describing. Phil
Debby, sorry for the delay. I’ve been away. Did you get your answer? Did you follow the steps I listed above?
To go your page and select “Set To Dynamic Page.” That creates an item page.
Go in to the URL settings for the page and remove any custom fields. Now the page is no longer an item page. It is now a category page.
I’ll assume you know how to use lists, tables, or repeaters to display your list on the category page, but if not refer to the help center for details.
Now create an item page by following Step #1.
Go into the URL and selected the fields you want to use from your collection to make the item page unique.
Now set the links in your custom page to connect to your item page (again if you don’t know how to do that, refer to the help center.
