Ecwid Frustrations...

I have a client who wanted two things…

  • the ability to sell items at wholesale cost online where the client would be tax exempt
  • the ability to charge taxes automatically based upon where the client lives

Ecwid advertises both of these features. It also came highly recommended by several experts. However, we are experiencing errors with both of these features. It is charging tax to tax exempt customers and not charging any tax at all to people who live in a different state than the brick and mortar business.

I figure I must be doing something wrong. The customer service representatives on the chat also confirm that everything looks like it is set up correctly.

Has anyone else had these problems with Ecwid and how did you fix it?

Thanks in advance!

Hi @allisonkubala ! My name is Ashley and I work for the Customer Success team at Ecwid! I’m happy to help with this issue you have reported.

The two points that your client is looking for can be done. Let me elaborate further on each point for you:

  • the ability to sell items at wholesale cost online where the client would be tax exempt
To set up wholesale pricing in Ecwid, we suggest setting up 2 categories. The first category will be a root category that you will eventually disable, so that your retail clients cant access it. You can title it whatever you choose, since it will be hidden. Next, you’ll create a subcategory within that root category, maybe titled ‘wholesale’, where you will list all of your wholesale products at the wholesale price you want to sell them at. From there, you can take this sub category and embed it onto a page on your site so that is available for your wholesale clients. I would suggest password protecting this page and providing the login info to those who are allowed to access it. From there, your customers are able to view wholesale products and shop. Here is a link to our Ecwid support article that shows how this can be set up: https://support.ecwid.com/hc/en-us/articles/207806725-Hidden-products-and-categories#DiscountsandWholesaleproducts

Regarding the tax exempt option, once your customer is listed under the ‘customers’ section (Go to My sales > Customers to see this), you can them mark them as tax exempt. As long as they place an order with the same email address that is listed on the customers page, they should never be charged tax. If you do not see that particular customer listed in the customers section, you can import them to using our import customers app, a free app that can be found in the ‘extensions’ section of the Ecwid control panel. • the ability to charge taxes automatically based upon where the client lives
Ecwid can definitely do this. There are two ways to set up taxes in Ecwid: the easiest way is to enable our automatic tax feature, which set up taxes based off of the company location your customer has specified under Settings > My profile in Ecwid. Or, if you need to set up other tax rates for other locations, you can use the manual tax feature, where you can specify a geographical zone and the rate that you want to charge. This set up can usually be a little more tricky than the auto taxes. Regarding the tax charges, generally you only need to charge taxes to customers that are located in the same state as the company. For example, if the company is based in California, any of the customers who shop on the store with a California address will be charged California sales tax. If someone from Arizona tries to buy something, they will NOT be charged taxes, since they are not a resident of California. I hope this helped! I’d like to take a look at your store setup to see if things are set up correctly, just to verify. If you can, would you message me with the store information (store ID or email that is used to login) so I can take a look? My email address is lorren@ecwid.com

Thanks!

Thank you for getting back to me! I will send you an email shortly!

Wish I’d thought to ask about Ecwid issues here! I struggled and struggled on my own. I’ll definitely be back if anything more doesn’t work the way they say they should!
