Going live with a site that will supercede the existing site

I created a copy of my website so I could edit it. (Not a test site, an actual separate site. I didn’t realize there was a test site capability on WIX.)

Now I would like to unpublish my existing site (which I know how to do) and publish my new site with the same domain as my old one. I can’t seem to find a way to do this easily and without a potential difficulty in the domain name?

Anyone done this and able to give me instructions?

Thank you!

Stacey

Hi, @Stacey_Lund !!

This link might be helpful, so I’m sharing it with you. :innocent:

Exactly as @onemoretime suggested

I’d also add that you can transfer your existing Premium plan - Assigning a Premium Plan to a Different Site in Your Wix Account | Help Center | Wix.com - to another site in your account.

It’s worth keeping in mind that this is similar to “migrating” a site, so you’ll want to check your SEO settings, URLs etc to ensure you have relevant redirects setup if needed.

It seems like it might be easier for me to just retroactively create a test site off the existing site/domain and then copy the new sites pages over. From there, I could unpublish the existing and publish the test site.

That seems more bulletproof, no?

I feel like some of the information might be a bit mixed up, but I don’t think it needs to be that complicated.

As Noah mentioned, Wix allows you to easily transfer a Premium plan between sites. Custom domains can be reassigned just as freely as well (although a custom domain can only be connected to a site that has a Premium plan attached).

That said, I believe your original goal was simply to test-publish the site. This test publishing feature was added relatively recently, so before it existed, you probably would have had to do what you’re currently trying to do. But you were fortunate enough to realize along the way that this feature is now available, right?

If that’s the case, it seems reasonable to keep running the original site as-is and use the test publishing feature before making minor updates. Then, before making a major update that involves significant changes, if you want to preserve the original site exactly as it is, you could duplicate the site and keep that copy as a backup. :slightly_smiling_face:

Thanks for all of our help. I ended up doing as you and Noah originally suggested and it worked like a charm. I really appreciate the help!
