I thought building an online calculator would be easy… until I actually tried it

I’m having trouble with
Building a reliable, interactive age calculator like the one at AgeCalculator360. I initially thought the calculation itself would be simple, but I’m struggling to turn the logic into a properly working web tool with accurate date handling, user inputs, and results.

Wix Studio Editor / Velo

What I’m trying to do
I want to understand how to build an interactive calculator that can take a user’s date inputs, process them correctly, and return useful results through a clean web interface. I’m mainly trying to understand the proper development approach rather than simply generating code with AI.

What I’ve tried so far
I’ve experimented with Python scripts, used Claude to generate and explain different approaches, tried AI-generated code, and tested several methods. Some individual pieces work, but I haven’t been able to turn everything into a reliable, complete calculator. I’m still a beginner, so I may be approaching the problem incorrectly.

Extra context
The biggest thing I’m trying to understand is where the calculation logic should live and how it should connect with the Wix interface. Should I learn and implement the core logic with JavaScript/Velo first, or is there a better Wix-specific approach for this type of calculator?

I’d really appreciate guidance from someone who has built similar interactive calculators in Wix.

Age calculator is three inputs and one function. No backend needed.

Add to your page:

  • DatePicker for birth date (#birthDate)
  • DatePicker for “calculate age as of” date (#asOfDate)
  • Button (#calculateButton)
  • Text element for the result (#ageResult)

Page code:

import wixWindow from ‘wix-window’;

$w.onReady(function () {
$w(“#calculateButton”).onClick(() => {
const birthDate = $w(“#birthDate”).value;
const asOfDate = $w(“#asOfDate”).value;

    if (!birthDate) {
        $w("#ageResult").text = "Enter a birth date";
        return;
    }

    const compareDate = asOfDate || new Date();
    const ageMs = compareDate - birthDate;
    const ageYears = Math.floor(ageMs / (365.25 * 24 * 60 * 60 * 1000));

    $w("#ageResult").text = `Age: ${ageYears} years`;
});

});

That’s it. The logic stays in page code — there’s nothing here that needs backend isolation. If you want months and days, account for variable month lengths (30/31, leap years). Most age calculators use a library for that (date-fns, moment), but the years-only version above handles 90% of use cases with no dependencies.

The “architecture” question you’re stuck on: this doesn’t need architecture. It’s 10 lines of frontend code.
