Slide show is one of the layouts available for the Gallery element. But the images in the gallery (both the Wix sample images as well as what I upload) fill only the upper two-thirds of the space. Why? I have found no way to control this.

You can control that, but the setting isn’t easy to find.
Select your gallery object and choose ‘Settings’ from the menu that appears.
From the Settings options, choose ‘Layout’.
You’ll now see the all the layout options that are available, You’ve chosen the slide show option.
At the bottom of that selection window, you’ll see a button to ‘Customize Layout’. Click that, and you’ll see a bunch of additional settings. The one you want is the ‘Info bar size’ – that represents the amount of space reserved at the bottom of each slide for displaying the title and description. From what you’re saying, I assume you aren’t displaying either, so you don’t want to reserve any space for them. Move the slider value to 0, and your slides should fill all the space.
