Trouble with the viewing size of my website

I’m having trouble with
I’m new to Wix and have never in my life attempted to build a website. This site is for a hobby. I have attempted to build it from scratch choosing not to use the AI. I’m struggling with the appearance of the site. In the editor and preview it looks fairly normal in size, but when you actually view it in Chrome, the images look huge.

Working in
Wix Editor.

What I’ve tried so far
I’ve built it with one hero page, splitting the hero page in two. I actually have a few versions, but have not been able to solve the problem. I’m hoping someone could give this technically challenged persons some guidance!

Hi @ChrisJV1963, welcome to Wix! Looking at your published page, the hero image is a tall portrait file (about 980 x 1470 px) sitting at full width, so in a big Chrome window it fills far more than one screen. The Editor view looks smaller because the editor canvas is zoomed out, so the published site is the true size. Try this: 1) In the Editor, click the hero image and drag the bottom handle up (or crop it) so its height is roughly 500 to 700 px. 2) If it’s meant to span edge to edge, put it in a Strip as the background (Add > Strip > Full-Width Strip, then Change Strip Background > Image) instead of a loose image, so it scales with the browser window. 3) Check the result with Preview at 100% zoom, then publish and reload the live site. If you share a screenshot of the Editor with the hero selected, I can tell you exactly which handles to move.

If this helped, please mark it as Solved.

Ecom_swift_LLC…thanks for your response! I was hoping to use my background image as a “wall to wall” background for my page but, I ended up doing what I think you recommended. I now have a solid color background or band around my image which is now reduced in size to 762 X 1142. It probably should be a little smaller but, the image starts getting cropped too much. So, I think I’m in decent place right now. Thank you for your assistance, you were a huge help!!!

Glad it’s sorted, that sounds like a solid setup now. Happy to look if you ever want to tighten the crop further, just drop a new screenshot here.

Ecom_swift_LLC…I’ve already taken up you time but, if you’re interested in looking around, this is the site…http://searssportingarms.com. I’m sure what you will find is that it is “bush league” but, I’m just a dumb refrigeration guy toying around with a hobby. It’s essentially just at the begining, I have a lot to do. I would appreciate your critique but, take easy on me…Ha!!! Thanks again for your assistance!!! Chris V.

Took a look, not bush league at all. The hand-drawn hunter/pheasant illustration and the aged-paper palette are genuinely well matched, it reads like an actual vintage Sears catalog rather than a generic hobby page. The GUNS/HISTORY/BLOG/EPHEMERA button row is a nice touch too, consistent style across all of them.

One thing worth fixing: that hero section is a tall full-height strip, so on a smaller or zoomed-in browser visitors have to scroll a full screen before seeing any of the actual buttons. I’d trim the hero height so at least the top row of buttons is visible without scrolling, same principle as the image-crop issue from before.

Good work for “just at the beginning.”
