I am wanting to start a business selling Wix templates to people that I charge a monthly fee to use.
Each person would need to buy a “License/Permission” to be able to use the template and then keep paying my monthly fee to continue using it each month.
Their are 2 main issues preventing me from using this business model and they are as follows:
If you make a custom Wix template (even by scratch), Wix does not give you the ability to prevent other people that you give it to from editing and copying your template, this is an issue for 3 reasons.
The first reason that this is an issue is because if people can just simply copy your site then they can then create as many copies of your site as they want and sell it themselves to other people as their own work, resulting in no reason for people to buy the template from YOU who actually created it.
The second reason that this is an issue is because not only can other people copy your templates and sell them as their own work but they can also edit the template which could give or take away things that make the template not work as it should and can reflect on YOUR reputation, even though you aren’t responsible for the edits.
The third reason that this is an issue is because as I stated in the beginning of this post, I am wanting to charge my clients a monthly fee to keep using my custom templates, however, if I cant restrict their access to the template then there is no incentive for them to keep paying me the monthly fee.
I am aware that I can simply host their site in MY account to be able to control their access to the template but as most people can imagine, this method would leave me susceptible to MANY legal liabilities from the client so that method is no use to me.
The way that I see it, there are 2 ways Wix can fix this issue. They can either give us the ability to prevent other people from editing and copying our templates once we send them to another Wix account OR they can somehow integrate this feature into their “custom branding” feature by giving Wix partners their own web hosting dashboard for clients, that way, we could prevent people from copying and editing our templates AND we would be able to restrict their access to our templates if they were to stop paying our monthly fees for access. This method might also be beneficial to the client because if they are not very tech savvy and or do not want to be bothered with creating a Wix account themselves then they simply would not have to since Wix partners could just manage the website themselves, however, the client would still be able to check their analytics and manage their payment credentials and data settings on their own.
And Wix should also give Wix partners the ability to completely custom brand this client dashboard to their own branding.
I literally can not start my business until this feature is created and I imagine that the lack of this feature is stoping MANY other Wix partners from starting their own business, assuming that they haven’t already had their custom templates copied and resold already from the lack of this information…
I like to think of myself as a Wix veteran, therefore, I am WELL AWARE of how freaking long it takes Wix to create very important features such as this one.
So please Wix, EXPEDITE THIS FEATURE ASAP.
