#FeatureRequest: Allow placement of clickable URLs in "Description" field of Wix Pro Gallery pictures

I am currently experimenting with deploying a Masonry type Wix Pro Gallery of pictures on the homepage. My intention is to get users to scroll through the homepage to interact with pictures that catch their attention. Hovering or clicking on a picture in the gallery may lead to one of the following desired effects:

  1. Opens a related blog link in the same window

  2. An overlay appears on the selected picture which shows a short text description and clickable link/URL, which opens a related blog link in the same window

I understand that it is already possible to set the gallery picture to open a blog link in a new window.
I would like to emphasise that this is not the solution I am looking for.

Already, I’ve discovered a related feature request and I have voted for it. If this vote goes through, it will provide for desired effect number 1 described earlier.
https://support.wix.com/en/article/wix-editor-request-ability-to-choose-if-a-linked-pro-gallery-image-opens-in-a-new-window-or-in-the-same-tab

I hope that desired effect number 2 can also be put up as a feature request since the effect is less intrusive to the user compared to effect number 1, and allows the user to be redirected only if he/she clicks on the URL in the overlay.

The wix pro gallery as it is, is already good enough to achieve 90% for this experimental deployment. I hope to see that it can go all the way!

Thanks,
Fabian

Hi, thank you for the detailed feedback regarding this request.

#Blog #FeatureRequest

Hey Fabian, this feature is already in our backlog. It’s good that you voted for it so you’ll be notified as soon as we add it, hopefully in the next couple of months

Hi Talke, thanks for the reply but which feature do you mean? Ideally I would like to vote for desired effect 2 but I have not yet found the specific feature request online to vote forward. If it already exists would you be able to provide the feature request URL?

The exact feature request article you attached will allow to you to both. Basically you’re missing an option to choose wether the link will open in the current, or a new tab. In the Pro Gallery you can add text on hover or underneath the item. If you’ll choose “what happens on click=a link opens”, and you’ll choose “open on the same window”- You will be able to do both 1 and 2. (Text on hover on click goes to blog on the same window) or just item click goes to blog on the same window. Does that answers your question?

There is still an issue missed out. During my attempts adding a text on hover in the Pro Gallery, I find that even if the text is a URL, it will not be clickable. I believe the text on hover is a view-only element. May need your help to confirm this. If so then the feature request for desired effect 2 needs further work than just to add on an option to choose whether the link opens in current or new window.

Well basically if you choose “a link opens” and underline the text it will feel like it’s a clickable text, but it won’t require clicking on the text directly the visitor can click anywhere on the image and he’ll be redirected.

Do you mean that the image will open in expand mode, unless someone clicks on the link directly?

Yes I know what you mean but that’s not it. I left the setting as “Nothing happens” instead of “a link opens”.

So the desired outcome is for a short text + URL to pop up as an overlay on the picture in the Pro Gallery whenever a user either mouseovers or clicks on a picture with a mouse (on desktop), or whenever a user touches a picture (on mobile). Also in the Pro Gallery “Settings” > “Layout” tab, I have also clicked on “Customize Layout” and ticked “Description” as info to display. You may refer to the screenshot below to see how I have achieved the effect by inputting my desired text into the “Description” field within “Manage Media” tool.

Unfortunately, the description text is non-clickable and is view-only. My feature request is for this description text to be a clickable item to achieve desired effect 2 as per my first entry.

Edit: I have also tested your method and I’m starting to see it as a viable solution, but how do I add an underline effect only to part of the text placed in the picture’s “Description” field? Assuming that I want to have both a short non underlined text, and followed by the underlined link call to action text.
