How long does it take for https to work after transferring a domain?

Greetings,

This morning, we started the process of configuring a domain name for our new site. I know it takes a couple of days for DNS to propagate, so this might be expected, but I’d like to make sure I didn’t get something wrong.

When I go to our site using http, it works and serves the new site. If I go to the https version, I get the error: This site can’t provide a secure connection www.yerbabuenanursery.com sent an invalid response. (and also the same for yerbabuenanursery.com, without the www.)

(I should also mention that sometimes I get the new site, and sometimes I get the old site…because of DNS propagation…that’s cool)

I don’t know if it takes a while for https to start working, or if I have something set up wrong. Once DNS is fully propagated, will http stop working and redirect to https automatically? Or is this something I have to set up?

I read the troubleshooting guide , and it seems to indicate that I need to wait until the domain fully propagates.

But then it goes on to mention:
If you purchased your domain outside of Wix, check with your domain host to make sure that DNSSEC is not signed for your domain as it can interrupt the propagation process.

We already owned this domain, and not from Wix (it’s on Hostmonster). We are connecting the domain with name servers, not pointing. I honestly have no idea how to check that DNSSEC is not signed…or if this is even the problem…

I have to admit, DNS is not my strong suit.

Thanks in advance

Tracey

Hi Tracey,
Generally this is an issue for Wix Customer Care. However I’ve contacted the team on your behalf and will follow up with you over email. Thanks!

Thank you.

I got a notification this morning that the DNS propagation was complete, but https still was not working, so I contacted support. The documentation for how to set up DNS using name servers for a domain purchased elsewhere is incomplete/wrong.

The docs list just 2 steps, which we did. In the SSL Troubleshooting doc , there is an instruction to make sure you have a default A record, but only if you have previously edited your domain’s A and CNAME records…which I hadn’t.

I checked what our defaults were, and there was one there (4 actually). I just assumed they were correct. Since I didn’t put them there, I figured Wix configured this for me. According to the support person, Wix ‘automatically’ adds a default A record, but apparently does it wrong. (? I don’t fully understand this ?)

Below are two screenshots. The first one is how Wix automatically configures this. The second one is how support told me to fix it.

I made the change this morning. SSL still isn’t working, but I’m hoping it’s just a propagation delay and that it will start working soon.

I asked the support person why this is automatically configured wrong, and the only answer he had was “it works for some people.” When I asked him to elaborate, he said he didn’t know why. I found this to be somewhat unsettling…why would setting up a domain purchased elsewhere using name service provide exactly two instructions, and then get it wrong? When would this work for other people? The support person didn’t know. I would like to understand this.

The only thing left for me to do is to wait for the default A records to propagate. The docs don’t explicitly mention a propagation delay. I’m going by what the tech support person said. If this is still wrong…I need to talk with someone in support who can help fix this.

Hello, I have the same problem. Is there any new progress?

I reset the A record so it looked like the and that fixed my problem.

Hi, I’m sorry to hear you’re also having this problem. Please contact Wix Customer Care for assistance with this issue. Thanks.

Hi, I have the same issue. How it worked out?
