Urgent: Multilingual Slug Customization Needed for SEO Survival

:police_car_light: SEO in Danger: Still No Localized Slugs for Multilingual Sites

Hello Wix Team and Community,

I’m reaching out on behalf of our website NinjutsuKyoto.com to highlight a critical SEO issue affecting all multilingual websites using Wix.
Technical Problem:

Wix currently does not allow custom URL slugs per language. As a result, English and French versions of our site still use Japanese slugs — a major obstacle for multilingual indexing and international SEO.
Key SEO Impacts:

  1. Multilingual Indexing Issues

Search engines like Google associate slugs with language and location. Japanese slugs on English/French pages confuse crawlers, often leading to poor indexing or irrelevant search results.
2. Keyword Relevance Loss

Slugs don’t reflect English or French search terms, drastically reducing organic visibility despite having well-optimized content in those languages.

  1. hreflang Limitations

While hreflang tags are implemented, they’re not enough. Without localized slugs, Google may ignore hreflang hints, damaging multilingual performance.

  1. Negative User Experience

Non-localized URLs lower click-through rates (CTR), especially when users see unfamiliar characters in the search results — reducing trust and clarity.

  1. Technical SEO Constraints

Without this feature, we cannot fully optimize our site’s URL structure — a core SEO factor. We’re left relying solely on metadata, backlinks, and other limited elements.
:red_exclamation_mark: Delayed Feature Release

Wix announced this feature would be available in November 2024 , but as of April 2025 , there is still no update and no access to localized slug functionality.

This delay seriously undermines our ability to compete internationally and places Wix far behind platforms like WordPress and Shopify, which already support fully customizable multilingual URLs.
Our Concrete Requests:

:white_check_mark: Urgently implement localized slug customization per language

:white_check_mark: Improve multilingual redirect logic

:white_check_mark: Provide public updates on the release timeline
Multilingual websites are a major part of global online strategy, and we count on Wix to keep up with the evolving needs of international SEO. Please let us know when this long-awaited functionality will finally be available.
Thank you,

Have you though about using language as subdirectory instead of sub domain?

If you do that Search Engines will treat all 3 language sites as seperate websites and you can manage the SEO of each of them separately. The will have separate search console dashboard as well.

If you want to use subdomain anyway, you might wanna check out the Wix Routers. That might be able to help you with it.

Thank you very much for your helpful response :folded_hands:

We truly appreciate the suggestion regarding subdirectories and understand the potential SEO benefits.

However, we would like to clarify that we are not looking to experiment with alternative setups or workarounds. What we urgently need is for Wix to implement a native feature that allows for clean, manual customization of product URLs for each language domain. This is essential for long-term SEO success, especially for international e-commerce businesses like ours (NinjutsuKyoto.com).

This functionality is already available on other major platforms such as Shopify, PrestaShop, and others.

For multilingual SEO to be effective, URLs must be readable and relevant to the user’s language, not just the content on the page.

Please escalate this request to your product and development teams. It’s not a nice-to-have — it’s a critical need for any serious global e-commerce strategy.

Thank you again for your time and support.

Looking forward to real progress on this key issue.

You should contact Wix Support for that. They might be able to give you the current status of this feature.
