Adjust menu size to fit full height of menu row?

I cannot adjust the height of a menu to fit the full height of a row - wix editor could do this.
Why? I want the menu item to highlight the hole menu section of the menu when hovered.

Currently the height is fixed and unable to edit this… cannot find any solution.

What is the solution for this, and why is wix studio less featured vs wix editor for things like this?

We’re even missing menu shadows.

Hi, @Sash !!

Select the menu, and you should see a “Layout” option. Click on it, and you’ll find a menu where you can set the “Spacing Between Items” in pixels. Changing this value will adjust the height. :innocent:

One reason why Wix Studio Editor may feel like it has fewer features compared to Wix Editor is that, in addition to being relatively new, it prioritizes flexible design customization through code, such as using global.css, rather than offering many template-based editing features. Wix Studio Editor is designed for professionals, so it may not always be as intuitive for everyone, and as a result, users may sometimes feel that “things that can be done in Wix Editor are not possible in Wix Studio Editor.” However, this doesn’t necessarily mean its functionality is limited; rather, it offers greater customization freedom. That said, to fully take advantage of this freedom, writing code is required, which could make it feel like “nothing can be done” for those who aren’t familiar with coding. :upside_down_face:

At this point, many people may find the standard Wix Editor easier to use in terms of completeness and user experience. Since Wix Studio Editor is still a work in progress, we can only look forward to future feature enhancements. :smiling_face_with_sunglasses:

As for changing the design when hovering over a menu, one possible approach is to place the menu element inside a container element and apply the design changes to the container instead.

Basically what you’re saying is Wix Studio is feature incomplete and hides basic functionality by forcing the user to do time consuming CSS/JS/Velo coding.

The head doesnt even have drop shadow functionality that someone requested over 2 years ago.

Additionally, when using sub menus, when you have 1st sub menu items, then second level deep, it doesnt nest back into the 1st sub menu layer like is common in websites, instead forces the second layer in the menu to be inline with the first making it extremely confusing for users.

About > Team > John for example.

About will expand showing Team but John is directly below it rather than another level below it. It’s completely wrong for user experience. How do we nest the third layer? Is it time consuming code only?

Is there any way to have the menu system nest properly?

Platform needs a ton of work, not happy with it. Wordpress is less time consuming currently.

Another example of a default template, broken with responsiveness. Doesnt even push the item down.

What the heck is up with this platform.

To be honest, I completely agree with you. Especially when it comes to important elements like menus, I think there should be more rich templates available. For some reason, Wix has very few templates that support nested structures, smooth item expansion, or other classic yet highly desirable features that make websites more dynamic and user-friendly. This isn’t just a Wix Studio Editor issue—it applies to Wix as a whole. Having such templates would make it much easier to create visually rich sites, but for some reason, they just aren’t available.

Of course, those who can code can always build these features themselves. However, even though Wix Studio is marketed as a professional tool, there still seems to be too large of a gap for users who lack coding skills. And even for those who can code, having a robust selection of pre-built templates would still be beneficial by reducing development time. That’s why I believe Wix should focus on expanding these options. As you pointed out, it’s strange that Wix lacks features that are considered standard on other platforms. :upside_down_face:

We can only speculate whether Wix isn’t prioritizing the development of such templates, isn’t interested in them, or is simply focusing its efforts on other features. But personally, I’ve always found it a bit odd.

As for menus, to be honest, I haven’t used Wix’s built-in menu features much, so I may not be the best person to help. Personally, I’d recommend using a mega menu, as it allows for a more modern design. You could probably create a nested structure by incorporating expandable elements within the mega menu.

I’m sorry that I couldn’t provide the exact answer you were looking for this time. :smiling_face_with_tear:

I usually don’t use Wix’s menu, so I hadn’t noticed, but you’re right—I’m not sure if a third-level nest is actually possible. In the editor, it seems possible to set it up, though it feels a bit forced. However, in preview mode, it looks like only up to the second level exists.

As you mentioned, the current situation is indeed confusing for users. It should be made clear whether a third-level nest can be created or not.

I’ll report this to the forum manager @noahlovell and see what they say.

Yea wix studio is broken from what I’m seeing, debating going back to Wordpress over this. This is not a professional grade tool and will take me 20x the effort to have basic functionality working.

A simple test is when you nest menus, even 1 level deep on mobile with a button below, when you expand it — it doesn’t push elements further below, it just goes through them as it expands.

Completely unacceptable and no way to fix this besides stripping the menu down.

I’m not happy with wix studio.

Also what other system do you use for menus, that’s SEO friendly and not broken?

Actually wix use to allow this for wix studio.

They have a video showing a flyout third and second layer menu working.

Where is this functionality now?
it appears that they changed, or removed it.

What is up with help guides and videos showing completely different UI and design elements that no longer exist in wix studio today?

@Sash

I checked, and it does seem that the menu element introduced in the video is no longer available. However, the “Horizontal Menu” shown in the video is still present on my site, so I was able to take a look at it. That said, I’m not sure whether a three-level nest is possible. In any case, this feature seems to be broken.

It’s possible that it was removed when the Mega Menu was introduced, as the Mega Menu might be considered a functional upgrade. But we’d need to ask Wix directly to confirm that. :smiling_face_with_sunglasses:

If a nested menu is absolutely necessary, an “accordion” might serve as an alternative. You can nest accordions inside each other like a Matryoshka doll, so theoretically, it should allow for as many levels of nesting as needed. This could work as a menu replacement.

Most likely, if you incorporate this kind of accordion menu into a Mega Menu, you could create a high-quality menu in just one hour!

I’ve created a short demo video to show how it works—take a look! :raised_hands:

By the way, it only took me about five minutes to create this menu using only Wix Studio’s features, so I don’t think it’s that difficult of a task. :innocent:

What is Wix official position on this? Are they working to fix this - why are settings just removed that provide less functionality?

For this matter, the only option is to ask the forum manager @noahlovell to confirm the intent with the development team. Once they have time, they will almost certainly respond, so for now, we just need to wait a little. They might be busy with something else at the moment. However, I believe they will notice this topic before long.

Hey @Sash!

I hope I can provide some clarity

We recently rolled out a new unified menu experience to Studio, as announced here. Which is why you might be experiencing things that are slightly different to previous tutorials etc.

Here’s a few articles that give more info about working with the new menus:

To answer some of your questions…

You’ll need to work with some of the options in the panel to adjust the height, such as “Item padding”.

It’s important to remember that Studio and Wix Editor are designed for different needs. Studio is built with agencies, freelancers, and enterprise users in mind, offering more flexible and customizable options - whereas Wix Editor focuses on out-of-the-box functionality.

The example you shared isn’t using Stacks. There’s currently no relation between the Menu and “Contact” Button. When the menu expands, it doesn’t push, because there’s no relation to the element under it.

By creating a Stack, you tell the elements “I want you to always have this spacing between each other”, so when the Menu opens, the Stack grows in height, and the Contact button always remains underneath it.

I recommend taking a look at this video, which goes into more details about what Stacks are and how they work - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ESFNNso4Vlo

Headers don’t have the shadow option as they are Sections - as Sections are the base layer of the page, and reach side to side, for the most part, shadows are redundant (as Sections always touch the side of the screen and arranged tightly to one another). As suggested in that request, using a stretched container provides the same functionality

I guess you’re talking about the “Flyout” option, right? I’ve asked the team and will circle round once I have more info.

I appreciate all the insights shared in this topic and shared a link with the team  Thanks for sharing!

Thank you for the detailed response—it clarified some issues, though not all.

I’m still facing significant hurdles with Wix Studio’s new menu system. There’s no up-to-date documentation or dedicated section for creating a mega menu anymore (I’ve searched extensively, and it’s missing from the builder), leaving me uncertain about how to implement this feature effectively. The removal of the flyout option also feels like a regression—third-layer nested items now appear in a single, always-visible stack next to their parent, resulting in a cluttered and confusing user experience. Adding a simple toggle beside the parent and subparent to expand or collapse would be a clean fix (this should be prioritized).

I’m also frustrated by the inability to add drop shadows to headers directly. The suggested workaround—using a stretched container with a shadow—feels like an awkward complication rather than a solution, and even when applied, it’s not as polished as it should be. None of the stock templates demonstrate this workaround either. Basic features like shadows, glass effects, or gradients should all be built into the header settings for a seamless design process, especially since users have been requesting shadows for over two years.

While Wix Studio targets agencies and freelancers (I’m in this group), it heavily reuses apps, add-ons, and UI elements—like the blog, portfolio, and gallery—from Wix Editor. This overlap makes it feel less like a distinct platform and more fragmented. For example, adjusting corner radii on photos in these elements is missing, which doesn’t align with Wix Studio’s supposed advanced functionality. It’s disappointing to see it lag in key areas or carry over the same limitations - i’ve found a good amount of examples where this can be seen.

The contact button issue I raised comes from one of your “responsive templates,” touted as a showcase of out-of-the-box functionality. I’m surprised it doesn’t use Stacks in the menu area to highlight proper responsiveness, given its purpose as a Wix Studio demo. Templates should model best practices—like mega menu support (why isn’t this featured, or deeply nested menus?), intuitive nesting, and niche case design options—rather than pushing users to scour forums for fixes.

I’d appreciate guidance on building a mega menu in the new system and any updates you can get from the team about the missing flyout option, as I’m willing to give Wix Studio another shot for development.

I hope Wix takes this feedback seriously and refines the product. Right now, headers, menus, and reused Wix Editor elements (blog, portfolio, gallery—still no corner radius adjustments) feel outdated in their execution.

Perhaps your insights from the team can shed light on improvements.
