Can Wix handle a community platform with memberships, user-submitted events and admin approval?

Hi everyone,

I’m currently deciding between Wix and WordPress for a new project. I really enjoy building websites in Wix, but I’m not sure if Wix can support all the features I have in mind.

The platform is called The Experience Club (“De Belevingsclub”) and is focused on bringing people together through activities and experiences.

This is the concept I’d like to build:

Memberships

There will be two membership levels:

Free members

  • Create an account.
  • Browse all activities.
  • Register for activities organised by The Experience Club.
  • Registration for activities should only be possible while logged in, but not logged in people can see the activities.

Premium members (paid subscription)

Everything included in the free membership, plus:

  • Submit their own activity through a simple form.
  • The activity should NOT go live automatically.
  • Every submission should first be reviewed and approved by me.
  • After approval, it becomes visible on the website.

I don’t want members to have access to my Wix dashboard or become contributors to the site.

Activities

Each activity should contain for example:

  • Title
  • Description
  • Date & time
  • Location
  • Category
  • Maximum number of participants
  • Optional waiting list
  • Price (or free)
  • Cover image

The organiser should simply submit the activity. I don’t want them to manage the website itself.

Payments

Some activities are completely free.

Some activities require participants to pay on arrival.

Some activities require payment during registration.

I also want to charge premium members a monthly or yearly subscription.

For paid activities, I don’t necessarily need automatic payouts to organisers. I don’t mind manually paying organisers afterwards if needed.

Community

I do not want a social media platform.

I specifically do not want:

  • Private messaging
  • Chat
  • Following other members
  • Public social profiles

I only want a simple community.

Member profiles should only show:

  • Name
  • Profile picture
  • City

Nothing more.

Interaction

I’d like members to:

  • Leave comments below activities.
  • Possibly rate an activity afterwards (optional).
  • Upload photos after an activity would be nice, but isn’t essential.

Search & Filters

I’d like visitors to filter activities by things like:

  • Category
  • Date
  • Location
  • Free / Paid

My question

Can Wix handle this without building a completely custom application?

I’m happy to use Wix apps such as:

  • Members Area
  • CMS
  • Pricing Plans
  • Events
  • Forms
  • Automations

If a small amount of Velo is required, that’s fine.

However, I’d like to avoid building a large custom-coded application if possible.

Has anyone built something similar in Wix?

Would you recommend using Wix for this project, or am I reaching the point where WordPress would be a better choice?

This is all possible. The only issue is using the Wix Events. Only collaborators can add events. So the work around is to build th eevents section with CMS and dynamic pages with a lillt bit of code.
