CMS item limitation

Hi there!

Question:
Do I REDUCE my CMS item limit by paying for my website?

Product:
Wix Studio

What are you trying to achieve:
Get more CMS items.

What have you already tried:
Read through FAQs and several topics on the forums (which only lead to confusion, I fear).

Additional information:
I built a website in Wix Studio and was planning to get a paid plan now to get rid of the ad and get a proper domain. However, I don’t really understand the CMS item limit. I need quite a high item limit for my website, but can’t pay hundreds of dollars for it. It’s not like I’ll be making money with the site. I read that free Wix Studio websites have a limit of 10.000 CMS items and started building my site. Now I see that the cheapest paid plan, for example, only seems to have 1.500 items (or, are these additional items, so does it mean 10.000 + 1.500?). 1.500 would totally ruin my plans and work of the last few months…

I’d appreciate any info on this before I pay anything. Thanks!

Hi, user2149 !!

Thanks onemoretime,
just to make sure I understand the pricing plan right… It does offer a total of 1.500 CMS items if I pay for the lowest plan, instead of 10.000 if I don’t pay at all? If CMS items are my most desired feature, I don’t really want to pay for a plan, right? Sorry if I appear a bit dumb, but I’m looking for sense in this  I thought I might be misunderstanding something.

I believe that this limit is probably the maximum number of items that can be saved in a single collection. If I’m wrong, I apologize. From my memory, there used to be almost no restrictions on this number as long as it was used normally, but I think it has changed recently. In your case, it seems that the limit of 10,000 is the overall item limit for the entire site, while the maximum number of items that can be saved in a single collection is 1,500. If possible, please do further research on your end, and I would appreciate it if you could share the results here. :raised_hands: I might be mistaken, so…

1500 items limit is for all site which means for all collections you have. If you are building something basic and you won’t use many data it can be enough. But if you plan to create something that will generate data constantly look for another solution.

And in this case you can’t find an external solution without JS, Backend coding experience.

Hello, Loeiks. It seems I’ve come to rely on you once again. I understand that you’re here to explain because I’ve quoted your previous post. Thank you. I realized that I had some ambiguities regarding the item count limit, so I’d like to take this opportunity to ask a question. I want to be able to explain it clearly to those who are confused next time. Since misunderstandings can arise from words, I’ll pose the question in a more mathematical format. Which of the following is correct?

Option1
(collection1’s items number + collection2’s items number + …) <= 1500

OR

Option2
(collection1’s items number <= 1500) and (collection2’s items number <= 1500) and …?

Hey, thanks for your answers!
If I don’t misunderstand this, option 1 would be the right answer. I’m just so confused because in the free version the limit seems to be 10.000 according to this information: Wix Studio: CMS Limits on Free Sites | Help Center | Wix.com
This way, I can’t really use Wix for my plans and honestly, I regard that as false advertisement. I was happy I’d be given at least 10.000 items for free which, only now, I found to be taken away if I start to pay. It’s still hard to understand for me what kind of concept this is supposed to be. I guess I’ll need to use another platform that offers more or even unlimited items. I don’t want to say I wasted my time on Wix (should have read about this issue earlier), but that’s still quite demotivating…

What are you trying to achieve with the items? I can probably offer suggestions depending on your use case. What is your project about?

Hmm…After rereading the article that Loeiks summarized, it seems that Option 1 is indeed the correct choice, which is quite disheartening, to say the least! Previously, there was a total limit of 10GB, and there used to be no limit on the number of items per collection as long as the data capacity allowed it. However, based on the text stating that the overall GB limit has been converted into a limit on the total number of items, it seems that Option 1 is the reality, even if I don’t want to believe it. It’s indeed strange that the free version allows for more items.

Currently, using the npm that Loeiks created, it seems we can operate external databases in the same way as Wix collections, which is my only hope at this point. I haven’t had the time to test it yet, but if this method works well, even with a little programming skill, one could be freed from the constraints of item limits. However, not everyone may have the patience to go that far. :raised_hands:

Since you didn’t tag me I didn’t see your message next time please tag like this @onemoretime or directly reply to my message so it tags automatically.

Answer is option 1. Your total database has an total item limit not based on each collection.

@loeiks Thank you, loeiks. I still don’t really want to believe it, but it looks like option one is the right answer after all… haha. One of the reasons I loved Wix was the freedom with item limits, so it’s disappointing. But I guess, as a business, it makes sense if they’re trying to boost revenue from lighter users.

For me, item limits aren’t an immediate issue yet, and I haven’t had the time to try it out, but I’m hoping to give the npm package that you and the team created a go by the end of the year.

Thank you again !!

Hi,
thank you all for your help, it’s much appreciated!
I found that bubble offers better possibilities for what I’m trying to achieve (gallery where users can upload images to, with a few interactive functions) and already began to learn how to use their workflows. Instead of workarounds for the Wix item limit, which may lead to more administrative effort and dependancies in the future, I’d prefer using a service that offers everything I need from the very start.
Still learnt quite a bit of Javascript thanks to Wix, so that’s not all too bad I guess

Choosing the right platform for the purpose is the best approach! Now I feel like trying out bubble too! Thank you for letting me know !

I hope your project goes well! :+1:

Coming in a little late, but here’s Yoav Abrahami himself explaining what happens to the 10k quota once a site is upgraded:
