How can add a facility whereby Members can upload PDFs and links to their member area?

What are you trying to achieve:
I’m creating a subscription service whereby customers upload documents into their Members area that I then use as input to the service. Customers should be able to login to their Members area page and upload their PDFs. It would also be helpful to have a free form text field for members to also copy and paste URLs.
What have you already tried:
I’ve looked at adding fields to the Members area but there’s nothing about uploading documents or files.
