Hi all,
Following your questions and feedback about the new Media Manager, we wanted to clarify the issues you’ve raised.
The old Media Manager was user-based (i.e. consisted of all your files from all your sites). This meant that files could not be transferred while transferring site, or fully shared with contributors (which is why you’ve approached support numerous times asking why your clients can’t access all the files you’ve uploaded while working on their site).
The new Media Manager is site based . This means that only the files relevant to the site you are working on are in the Media Manager, and they are part of the site - available to all site contributors as well as when you transfer your site to the client at the end of a project.
What happened to my files in the transition from old MMgr to new MMgr?
If you are the site owner and you did not have contributors on this site at the point of transition >> we’ve duplicated all the files from your account to this site to make the transition easier for you.
If you had contributors on your site >> only shared media (i.e. Site Media tab in the old MMgr) was copied to the new site based media, where it is available for all site contributors. What behavior should I expect in new sites?
If you you are building a site from scratch >> the MMgr will start empty, as it will for each new project. You can import files from other sites by clicking Upload Media > My Wix Sites > All My Files - all the files and folders from there can be imported directly the your new site. Reminder: once you transfer this site or add contributors to it, contributors will be exposed to all the files you’ve added to the the MMgr in this site.If you are duplicating an old site (e.g. a template you’ve created and reusing for various clients) >> all the files that were duplicated to this site as part of the transition to the new MMgr are now available in the new site (as stated above, since you were the sole owner of the original site and had no contributors). You are the only one exposed to the files until you add a contributor or transfer the site to someone else.
When you start working on your new site, or when you plan on sharing this site with clients, you should go over the files and delete all the files which aren’t relevant for this project. This extra step is only relevant for old sites . Once you start a new site and fill it with media, it is expected to duplicate that site’s files when you duplicate the site. This should make working with clients easier on new sites. Clarification: ** when transferring a site, it is stated in the transfer site pop up that the media uploaded to this site is transferred as well. There are no circumstances in which files from one site are available to users of another site without an active confirmation from your side, and you should review all the files in the MMgr prior to transferring your site or adding contributors.** What should I do prior to adding a contributor or transferring an old site (e.g. any site I’ve been working on with the old Media Manager)?
If you haven’t done so in the beginning of the project, go over the files and folders in the MMgr and make sure you delete all the files that you do not want others to have access to (this deletion will not affect your media in other sites, as you are deleting a duplicated file). Remember that media you add from now on is site based , and every new contributor/owner can view it.
We hope this clarifies everything. We know that this transition requires some adjustments from your side as Wix experts, but rest assured that this change was done based on your feedback and with your needs in mind. We keep working on improvements and adding new features that will provide value for you and your clients. Keep sharing your feedback and thoughts in this respected forum, we are always listening.
This post is great for those of us in the Experts group, but a notice to the larger community is warranted. Perhaps via the Wix blog, a help center article or two, the weekly roundup newsletter–anywhere you can think of so that people know about this change.
While I know we give permission to transfer ownership of the media when we transfer ownership of a website, during this transition many people, myself included, and other very responsible/professional Wix Experts, did not know we were transferring access to all our media files, not only the ones used on the particular website. This is a privacy issue and a potential security breach.
I’m sure the new editor will be fine once we all learn how to use it.
I appreciate your efforts in getting this fixed and cleared up.
I personally love the new MMgr but I do understand the privacy concerns expressed by Dena and others. The new photo editor is pretty nice, although it could have a few more filters. It’s not a big deal as I usually edit my pics before uploading. I like that you can change the dimensions of an image directly in the editor. Big improvement!
I love the new MMgr both in how it looks/works and with the site based shared contents between all the people who works on the site. Excellent job on this piece of software and although I am sure some people will not like the whole sharing preferences due to the type of business they run with their WIX account, me, as a web designer - it is just perfect - and solve so many issues I have whenever I joined a site to take over and work on.
Guys, I’m so grateful for this post. Big panic yesterday realising I had just shared a site with a new customer and it had other files in the MMgr. Could not understand why.
This has cleared it all up and totally makes sense about how to manage the files in this way. Thanks!
If you open the folders, you’ll see the files…I am trying to stay optimistic about this…but I preferred the old media manager, as well. At least at this point.
I have had major issues with the new media manager. Some of my original folders have been renamed and duplicated, making it a nightmare to find the original files. Although it is a good idea to be able to transfer the media over with the site to the client when ready to publish, the technical issues with this new media manager are actually making life more difficult! It would be far more helpful for example, if there was a search feature so you could locate your original files more easily, plus the options to view your files in a list view rather than just as thumbnails. At the moment the media manager is too clumsy and time consuming, I would prefer to revert to the old version until this new one has been updated accordingly.
Can someone explain if they are having a similar issue and how to resolve this issue. I’m creating new sites from scratch (blank template). So there is no previous history of the site, it is a brand new blank template each time. I then create a folder in the media manager for that site ( the Media Manager is empty at this point by the way) and I upload all my files into the folder I created for that site. When the site is signed off I transfer it to the client’s WIX account as I always do, except, on more than one occasion it has transferred all my site folders from projects going back to 2012 (thousands of files) with the site. Am I missing something? I thought that if we are creating a new site, from a blank template, and the MM is empty and we create a folder for that project and upload into it, only that data will transfer? I should add that some of these sites are pretty recent, so created after the new MM came into effect - like as recent as 2-3 weeks?
I have an issue where it appears all my old sites have access to site folders of numerous old site folders. It would appear when I give some one a contributor access they gain access to several site files not just the site I add them to. I have flagged this up to support and this has been escalated, still waiting on a reply. I will wait for a reponse but if I am reading this correctly all these files are duplicates so I assume I will need to go into each site where this has happened and delete the files which are not related to that site (since the files are duplicated I will not lose the files for the correct site and just need to do an admin job to delete the folders that do not relate to a given site. If someone can confirm I am understanding this correctly I will crack on with it. I am off on holiday for a week so would be good to get this done before I go…
@brownowlcreative as the new media manager is site based - you don’t need to create a folder for the site that you are starting to work on, as every file and folder you upload to that media manager is now ‘assigned’ to that site. Note that if you import your old files (even if you put it in a different folder) to that site media manager - they are also assigned to the site and will transfer along with it.
@brownowlcreative Can you send me an example for such site which was transferred with all your old files and folders that you created from scratch? you can email me to: yaaraa@wix.com. Thanks!
