Hi. We are completely new to Wix but have a client who has an existing Wix site and wants a redesign. We’re under the impression that we just create a new site for them, then transfer the domain to this new site once complete (correct me if there are better workflows). And it seems like using this new Wix Studio platform would be the best going forward, especially as it seems to be the only way to be able to edit CSS directly for more control.
But how do we migrate all of their existing content over to this ‘new’ site?
Their existing site has maybe 8-10 static pages that we could easily enough just copy/paste content between if need be.
But, it also has a shopping cart with about 30-40 products. And it has what seems to be a unique ‘templated’ page type (what we might call a ‘custom post type’ in Wordpress terminology) for hundreds of additional similar pages. These all have the same layout & content types (e.g., thumbnail image, title/year/type/color lines, description copy, and guestbook option at bottom). So we assume these may be what Wix calls ‘dynamic’ content, but just guessing.
Is there a reliable export/import feature to bring this bulk content over?
Is there anything they would potentially lose when doing this and switching to the new site once complete (which may take several weeks)?
Is there a different/better workflow for doing a complete redesign of a Wix site while leaving current site live, without potential to lose content or other important data?
Thanks for any insight here! Need to put a proposal together and want to get a feel for the scope of this.
Hi
I’m by now means a wix experienced user but I have been using it a long time, and re-built my website numerous times in all three editors. The export feature for your products is what you want to use for the new site. Download the CSV from their current site, check it and upload it to the new one.
If they have product images in the old one then you can make them accessible in the new site by opening the image library and creating a board in the old site. Once you’ve done that and put all the products in that board, you can make it viewable to all team mates - a link to instructions on how to do that are in the pop up box - see below. Those images will then be available in the new site. BUT if you delete the old site those images will be deleted as well so it might be better to upload the images from scratch to the new site.
in terms of losing stuff, I’ve not lost anything when I’ve uploaded anything from a CSV file.
I’m not sure if Wix has created the ability to transfer the design to a different editor yet - I think its on the cards though I believe. If the old site is in editor rather than editorx you might be able to an auto rebuild but you’d need to have a dig around to see. There might be ways to do all this using code but I wouldn’t know about that stuff.
Sorry i can’t be more help but hopefully that’s clarified a few points for you. Good luck!
Revisiting this topic as we now have a signed contract and will need to begin working on the new site soon. Want to see if there are any more recent developments with Studio that may affect best workflow here, or any additional insight with the best way to migrate content from an existing site (most likely using regular Editor) to a new Studio site.
ADDITIONAL QUESTIONS:
To best accommodate migrating content, especially store and/or dynamic ‘CMS’ collections, will we need to create this new site in the client’s Wix account where it will eventually live once live, or can it be developed in our Wix account?
If it needs to be developed in the client’s Wix account, will they by default have full admin access to it with no way to maybe restrict access to areas to make editing simpler and more foolproof for them in long run?
If the new site can be developed in our Wix account, is it simple enough to transfer site to client’s account when ready to go live? And if we do this, same question about whether we’d be able to restrict access for them.
Is using ‘Boards’ as described by Chavvers the only or best way to share or migrate media items (mostly photos) from old site, or is there any way to export the full-size originals that were uploaded to current site?
Thanks again for the insight here. We don’t want to start going down a road that will end up costing a lot in extra hassle or resources as we continue learning more.
