Title:
Wix Multilingual URL Slugs for Wix Stores: A Critical Feature for International E-Commerce and a Deciding Factor vs Shopify
We would like to follow up on the long-standing request regarding fully localized URL slugs for Wix Stores products, categories and collections.
This is no longer a minor SEO improvement. For businesses creating a serious international e-commerce website, it has become a platform-selection criterion.
Our own situation illustrates the issue clearly.
We use Wix for NinjutsuKyoto, with content intended for Japanese, English-speaking and French-speaking audiences. We are prepared to continue investing in Wix and renew or upgrade our Premium subscription, but one technical limitation remains decisive:
we need to be able to assign a different URL slug to the same product or category in each language.
For example:
/fr/boutique/tenue-ninja
/en/shop/ninja-clothing
/ja/ショップ/忍者装束
A multilingual website should not only translate the visible content. Its URL architecture should also reflect the language and search intent of each market.
Why this feature has become urgent
For international merchants, localized product and category URLs directly affect:
- organic visibility in each language;
- clarity and trust in search results;
- international SEO architecture;
- internal linking;
hreflang;- canonical URLs;
- XML sitemaps;
- localized Google Ads and social campaigns;
- product sharing;
- long-term URL management and redirects;
- the ability to build separate keyword strategies for Japanese, English and French markets.
A French customer searching for a product should ideally see a meaningful French URL. The same principle applies to an English or Japanese customer.
Language prefixes alone are useful, but they are not equivalent to true multilingual slug localization.
Why this matters when choosing between Wix and Shopify
Many merchants evaluating a new international e-commerce project are effectively comparing platforms such as Wix and Shopify.
Wix has major advantages:
- a very accessible website editor;
- strong design flexibility;
- integrated multilingual tools;
- good content-management capabilities;
- an attractive ecosystem for businesses combining editorial content and commerce.
However, international merchants also evaluate the platform according to its ability to scale technically across several markets.
If one platform allows greater control over multilingual SEO architecture while another restricts product and collection URLs, that difference can influence the entire platform decision.
For a merchant planning to invest years in:
- product creation;
- translations;
- backlinks;
- SEO;
- advertising;
- content marketing;
- international expansion,
changing platforms later is expensive and risky.
That is why this feature can influence whether a business starts with Wix, remains with Wix, or migrates to another e-commerce solution.
What we are asking Wix to prioritize
We believe Wix should make the following functionality available across Wix Stores:
- Independent product slugs for every language
- Independent category and collection slugs for every language
- Support for both Latin and non-Latin scripts, including Japanese
- Automatic generation of correct
hreflang - Correct canonical URLs for each localized page
- Localized URLs included in XML sitemaps
- Automatic update of internal links
- Automatic 301 redirects when a localized slug is changed
- Full compatibility with Google Merchant Center and other shopping feeds
- A clear migration mechanism for existing multilingual Wix Stores
Ideally, a merchant should simply be able to open the multilingual SEO settings for a product and define:
English slug:
ninja-clothing
French slug:
tenue-ninja
Japanese slug:
忍者装束
Wix would then handle the technical relationships between these pages automatically.
This could become a strong competitive advantage for Wix
Rather than viewing this only as a missing feature, we believe Wix has an opportunity here.
If Wix provides a simple, reliable and fully automated multilingual URL system for Stores, it could become a major selling point for international businesses that do not want the complexity of managing several separate stores or highly technical SEO configurations.
The ideal Wix proposition would be:
One store. One catalog. Multiple languages. Fully localized content, metadata and URLs.
That would be extremely compelling for small and medium-sized international merchants.
Our position as a Wix customer
We would prefer to continue developing NinjutsuKyoto with Wix rather than rebuilding the site elsewhere.
However, before renewing or committing further to a Premium e-commerce subscription, we need confidence that Wix intends to support a genuine multilingual e-commerce architecture — not only translated content.
If this functionality is already under development, even a clear official roadmap would be valuable.
A statement such as:
“Localized Wix Stores product and category slugs are currently under development and planned for release during [period].”
would allow businesses to make an informed decision rather than migrate because of uncertainty.
We would also like to hear from other international merchants
For other Wix users building multilingual stores:
- Is localized URL management also important in your platform choice?
- Have you considered Shopify or another solution because of this limitation?
- Would this feature make you more likely to choose or remain with Wix?
- Which languages and markets do you currently operate in?
The purpose of this request is not simply to criticize Wix.
It is to encourage the development of a feature that could make Wix considerably stronger for international e-commerceand help merchants confidently choose Wix for long-term multilingual projects.
We hope the Wix product team will consider giving this feature a high priority and provide the community with a clear update on its current development status.
