Have a new member automatically assigned to free/basic membership after sign up

When someone signs up for my website, I would like for them to automatically become a “Basic member” which is the free membership part of our plans section.

The customer has to manually select the Basic plan. Can I set it up so that they automatically become a basic member? Thank you!

So they have to sign up for an account, and then select the free plan?
