Wix does not allow a site visitor to become a member if they are using a VPN. When they complete the sign-up form, they will end up in a never-ending recaptcha loop, even if recaptcha and all other spam protection methods are disabled in the site member settings.
I understand that this is to prevent spam accounts, but it is not a good solution. Many people use VPNs, and it doesn’t even inform the user that the reason they can’t proceed is due to their VPN. It just puts the user in an endless cycle of “Select the traffic lights”.
I first reported this problem to Wix around a year ago, but they’ve never looked at it. It affects all Wix sites.
Very disappointing for all Wix site owners, especially those who use the site-members feature.
At very least, can you please amend the sign-up process so that the site visitor is informed that the reason they can’t proceed is because they’re using a VPN??

Instead of using the native Wix registration window have you attempted to create a custom one instead?
I could create a velo sign-up form but I don’t think it would solve the problem. When the register function is called, wouldnt it still cause the recaptcha to appear? It seems it is part of Wix’s system.
Hi, kristina123 !
Wix seems to frequently change its default registration screen, which I think increases the likelihood of encountering new, unknown issues each time. Therefore, as Code Queen mentioned, I believe it’s better to create a custom registration screen. Additionally, I previously experienced issues with reCaptcha’s functionality, so I’m currently using hCaptcha. This is just my personal opinion, but hCaptcha seems more stable.
Thanks onemoretime
Unfortunately it is not possible to disable recaptcha on a Wix site. You can switch it off in the settings, but Wix will still use it under certain circumstances. I don’ think this problem can be resolved by using a custom/velo sign-up form.
Give it a try on your own website - try creating an account on your site with a VPN.
@noahlovell Can you raise this with anybody?
Sure thing - let me see what the team has to say
Okay - chatted with the team about it.
Wix uses a third party to help prevent spam signups on sites. When using a VPN, you may be using an IP address that has been deemed as coming from a potential spam source (since it may have been used by a spammer previously). It’s recommended to choose a different IP/Server in your VPN.
The team will also real soon be improving the existing experience to make it clear that this is the case for those signing up on a site and might be facing this (getting stuck in a loop).
Hope this helps
It’s not much use telling me that I need to choose a different VPN server, as it is the customer who faces this issue. However, it is good that the user will soon be informed.
Could you keep us up-to-date on this issue?

I’m with you - simply sharing the context of why it happens.
Will keep you updated as I hear more
@noahlovell
I lost a customer this morning because he couldn’t create an account. He emailed me to tell me that he wouldn’t be proceeding because he couldn’t get past the first hurdle.
Can you let the team know this happened to me? And ask them if they can expedite the update which will advise customers that the reason they can’t proceed is because of their VPN? It’s hardly a big update but would make a huge difference.
